charity ya ya

Why should Junior League have all the fun?

Man I’ve thought about doing charitable work forever but always felt too busy or broke.

Well now the business is in its third year and it’s JUST beginning to pay for itself, and that’s extra income that no one was banking on.  So what’s 10% of gravy?  Still more than 90% gravy that you weren’t expecting.

Starting now, immediately, with the full force of the present moment, Hallowed Grounds is donating 10% of its profits to local charities.  Wow that feels good.  And I haven’t paid a dime yet!

xo Austin, I love you, stay healthy.

definition of small business

small: two girls, one espresso machine

smaller: one girl moves to Alaska

smallest: ???  don’t think it could get any smaller!

Miss you Lucy!!

Code whisperer

Okay, sure, I’d rather be knitting or watching “30 Days of Night” or contemplating why puppies are so cute.  But I put all that raucous action aside for you, gentle reader!  So what did I do for about 16 hours this past weekend?  Why I re-vamped my website, that’s what.

Not fun, not at all, but curiously rewarding, as any hip and pasty geek will tell you.  Content changed dramatically per the suggestion of my friend David Bodai who’s a marketing expert – though in the highly specialized field of sporting excursions, not in event services.  Nevertheless he gave me some amazing directions on how to include much of the information a user is looking for without cluttering it – he basically got me to simplify and direct it and more importantly he told me how.

And then it was on to format.  We had a calendar on there – do maybe 3 public events/year so it was virtually empty.  We had a twitter feed on there – haven’t tweeted in ages.  Rude!

So I went to another guy, my tech guru who shall remain namelessly off the grid, and he showed me how to identify the different sections of code (that’s the “div”s for those of us in the know!); how to eliminate them and also how to save them in case you are wrong.  Which can happen.  Not likely, but possible.

Upshot, I now believe that I can read code.  This may come as a surprise to anyone who witnessed a recent altercation with my Mom’s iPad.  Oh ye of little faith.

Wedding at One World Theatre

Double-check the checklist and move out.  It’s a straight shot north on 360 to Bee Cave, maybe a mile of road, and there it is on your left, a beautiful villa-turned-theater that doubles as an event space.  This is One World Theatre. Magical.TheatreImage

Today the sky promises rain.  After this arid summer you don’t believe the promise.

Begin to unload the vehicle.

GET DRENCHED.  Whaah?

The bride must be freaking out!  What were the odds of rain on her day of all days?  But there you are and they say rain for your wedding day is good luck.  The adage holds true.  By the time the guests arrive, the sky is clear, and we are left with wet earth whose heady scent mixes with the bridal bouquets.

And you can only occupy your own small space, can only see this union through the steam from your espresso machine.  But here behind the theater’s copper bar, with happy guests and a glowing couple, all you can think is…”perfect.”
